Jedforest 42 Falkirk 29 Full Match Report

Robert Marshall27 Feb 2017 - 15:53

Finding themselves down by 30-7 five minutes into the second half, four excellently taken tries sees Falkirk put a better reflection on the final score at Riverside Park.

Trailing by 30-7 five minutes into the second half, and staring a heavy drubbing in the face, Falkirk fought back admirably with four excellently taken tries at Riverside Park Jedburgh last weekend to put a more favourable reflection on the final result, although their usually sharp defence was not up to their usual high standards.

However, it was Falkirk who opened brightly in Jedforest's half and were awarded a third minute penalty for their efforts on the home side's ten metre line, which Stand-Off Glen Faulds struck sweetly only to see the ball strike the crossbar and bounce backwards into the field of play. Nevertheless that just seemed to spur them on as they went on to open the scoring, just three minutes later, when crisp handling from the back division inside Jed's 22 metre area enabled Outside-Centre Kyle Rowe to burst through for a well taken try, which Glen Faulds duly converted.

Alas Jed struck back with a vengeance and exposed some glaring gaps in Falkirk's defence in the process, with back-to-back tries from Left-Winger Rory Marshall and Right-Winger Callum Young in the 10th and 17th minutes respectively. Maintaining the upper hand the border side's forwards then took control in the top right hand corner of the pitch with Flanker Michael Weekley barging his way over for try number three at the end of the first quarter of play. Managing to stem the flow somewhat Falkirk fared marginably better in their defence until the closing minute of the half when they lost control of the ball near the touchline and Jed's Full-Back Lewis Young fly-hacked the loose ball on and followed up well to get the touchdown near the corner-flag, with Stand-Off Robbie Yourston converting.

HT: Jedforest 22 Falkirk 7.

The same man then went on to convert a penalty for Jed within two minutes of the restart, very shortly before a powerful break from Scrum-Half Sean Goodfellow saw him cut loose from midfield and send his Outside-Centre Gregor Young in for a try seemingly from nowhere.

To their credit Falkirk regrouped and countered in the 51st minute when Flanker Andrew McNab crashed over from a five metre driving maul in the corner for an unconverted try only for Jedforest's Back Row Forward Graham Robson to reply in kind very shortly afterwards. Having none of it the Sunnysiders then put in some fine phases of play under Jed's posts before a neat inside pass from Liam Brims sent Gary Dempsey in under the uprights, with Brims presently slotting over the conversion.

In a hectic closing six minutes Angus Inwood went on to add another impressive try for the visitors in the 74th minute but Jed retaliated with try from Jamie Hynd, converted by Yourston before Falkirk closed off the encounter with a well worked try from youngster Gregor Ramsay.

This was strange game for Falkirk, our usually reliable defence was inconsistent, our ball retention was similarly not to the high standards that the boys have set themselves and we gave away possession all to easy. To Jed's credit they exploited our weaknesses and you could see their 7's background come to the fore as they shipped the ball wide at every opportunity. When we played to the standards that the boys normally play too, we scored a deserved try bonus point with some very well worked tries.
