Aberdeen Grammar 26 Falkirk 29 Full Match Report

Robert Marshall31 Jan 2017 - 13:52

A very much improved second half performance coupled with dramatic long range drop goal bang on full time from Liam Brims saw Falkirk take the spoils at Rubislaw.

In yet another nerve-racking cliff hanging encounter and after suffering a torrid first half in which they were pretty much under the cosh and trailing by 19-5 at the break,a very much improved second half performance coupled with a magnificent accurately struck long range drop-goal from Liam Brims, near full time saw Falkirk grab victory from the jaws of defeat at the Rubislaw Playing Fields last weekend.

Following a period of early sparring Grammar began to show that they meant business as they tested Falkirk's defence out at every opportunity and after subjecting their opponents to a concentrated period of pressure in their 22 metre area Grammar's back division worked well in putting Full-Back Conor Lavery over for a try in the corner in the 15th minute. Five minutes later Grammar kept up their relentless pressure in Falkirk's last quarter of the field and the visitors seem to have been caught with their pants down as Stand-Off Sam Knudson cantered over unopposed for what seemed an easy try. With Falkirk struggling to even get their hands on the ball the Granite City side went on to increase their lead in the 27th minute, when after again pressurising Falkirk under their posts a quickly taken short penalty from Flanker Dom Wallen saw him crash over for try number three ,with Inside-Centre Tom Aplin converting the last two tries.

However, a spirited fight back from Falkirk near the end of the half saw their forwards work well for Flanker Andrew McNab to barge over from a five metre ruck in the 39th minute, with brims narrowly missing the conversion.

HT: Aberdeen Grammar 19 Falkirk 5.

Falkirk started the 2nd half as the finished he 1st on the front foot and back-to-back penalty conversions from Brims in the 47th and 52nd minutes respectively narrowed the deficit, but that did not last long as Grammar took advantage of a loss of control on midfield by Falkirk and added their bonus point awarding try when Tom Aplin broke through for the touchdown, before adding the conversion himself.

However, an immediate response from Falkirk saw a good build up from midfield saw Falkirk's backs they used the ball well, which enabled Outside-Centre Angus Rennie to take advantage of a neat inside pass and crash over for an unconverted try. No doubt at all encouraged by that, the Sunnysiders got their tails up andjust six minutes later, in a touchline bordering build up Inside-Centre Andrew Hamilton finished the move off in style by darting over for the try, which Brims duly converted.

With both sides going hammer and tongs at one another Brims then went on to level the match at 26-26 when he converted a 75th minute penalty and in drama filled last minute of regulation time he composed himself and sent a sweetly struck long range drop goal bisecting Grammar's uprights to the obvious delight of his team-mates and travelling supporters.

Falkirk had a few minutes to hold out as Grammer threw everything at them but the visitors held out for a fine away win, they fought for every ball, they worked hard for each other and their never say die attitude was a credit to them and the club.
