Showing definite signs that the new squad of players is starting to gel as a team Falkirk convincingly defeated a stuffy Kirkcaldy side by four tries to one at Beveridge Park last weekend to chalk up their first league win of the season. However after producing a satisfactory first half display they seemed to lose focus and take their foot off the accelerator pedal, thus allowing the Fifers back into the game in the second period of play, and it took an injury time try to finally safely seal victory for the visitors. Using the ball well, and fielding newly arrived South African Lock-Forward Johan Wagenaar, a sparkling start by Falkirk saw neat interpassing between forwards and backs as they surged deep into Kirkcaldy's half, and following an incisive break from Inside-Centre Andrew Hamilton the ball was swiftly moved right from the ensuing ruck for Full-Back Graham Lindsay to take possession and squeeze in near the corner flag for an early third minute try. Countering shortly Left-Winger Finlay Smith converted a penalty for the home side, but their fortunes were compounded in the 12th minute when Full-Back Kurt Littlejohn was yellow carded for a deliberate knock-on. Re-establishing themselves Falkirk then put together some promising phases of play before Prop-Forward Lewis Skinner took control, and from the resultant ruck quick ball enabled Right-Winger Thomas Kalin to break clear away from just outside Kirkcaldy's 22 metre line and dot the ball down under the uprights in the 22nd minute. Giving their opponents little time to recover Falkirk were back on the charge just four minutes later when they won clean ball from a scrum on the Fifers' 5 metre line near the corner flag, with the ball being sped along the back division for Andrew Hamilton to break through near the posts for try number three, with Stand-Off Liam Brims converting all three touchdowns. Finlay Smith then went on to convert back-to-back penalties for Kirkcaldy in the 30th and 37th minutes respectively for a half time score of Kirkcaldy 9 Falkirk 21. Whether it was complacency or lack of a cutting edge but basic errors and wrong option taking began to creep into Falkirk's play after the break,as several promising passages of play broke down needlessly. Taking full advantage the Fifers fought back, and it came as no surprise, when Kurt Littlejohn broke through for a try in the 61st minute, which was converted by Finlay Smith following a concerted period of pressure in Falkirk's last quarter of the field. With the gap between the sides now narrowed to five points Falkirk managed to stem a determined onslaught before they turned over ruck ball on their own 22 metre line near the touchline, with Scrum-Half Harry Russell snapping up the ball and racing threequarters the length of the pitch for the bonus point awarding try in the 83rd minute, with Brims adding the difficult conversion from the touchline.
