Despite mounting an injury time last ditch attempt to snatch victory Falkirk were just pipped at the post by newly promoted Preston Lodge in a very entertaining end-to-end match at Pennypit Park,Prestonpans last Saturday afternoon. Settling the quicker P.L. took full advantage when Falkirk lost control of the ball and infringed just outside their 22 metre area, and Full-Back Paul Glynn wasted no time at all in converting the resultant 3rd minute penalty. Keeping Falkirk on the back foot P.L.'s formidable pack of forwards then proceeded to pin their opposites clear back to their 5 metre line, near the corner flag, with Number 8 Paul Voy breaking off the tail of a maul and squeezing in for an unconverted try only four minutes later. Encouragingly though Falkirk countered admirably not long afterwards, when following good territorial gains from the forwards, the ball was swiftly switched left for Inside-Centre Andrew Hamilton to skirt the touchline and dash 25 metres for a try in the corner. Stand-Off Liam Brims then slotted over back-to-back penalties in the 22nd and 27th minutes for Falkirk, just three minutes before the visitors went on to score an absolute peach of a try. Flanker Cole Ronald intercepted the ball deep inside his own half and charged on before feeding the back division, whose accurate and slick handling enabled Left-Winger Gary Dempsey the space and time to scorch nearly half the length of the field for a spectacular try, which Brims duly converted. Ominously though P.L. retaliated strongly in a very similar vein as to their first try, only three minutes later, when concentrated pressure on Falkirk's line enabled Paul Voy to crash over for his brace to make the score at the break Preston Lodge 13 Falkirk 18. After almost the whole of the third quarter had remained scoreless the game burst into life in the 58th minute when P.L. hit a purple patch, when yet again they used their forwards to a very telling effect. Firstly, after a series of five metre rucks and a quick tap penalty, that man Voy was on the spot to bulldoze his way over for his hat-trick of tries, with Glynn adding the conversion. Alas if that was not bad enough Falkirk were hit with a double whammy only four minutes later when Ronan Runciman barged over in the corner from an almost identical build-up. Nevertheless, and to their credit,Falkirk mounted a spirited counter, and levelled the match in the 71st minute, when they surged into P.L.'s last quarter of the field, with Stuart Govan breaking through for the touchdown from broken play, with Brims slotting over the match levelling conversion. Arguably a draw would have been a fair reflection on proceedings but P.L. were having none of it, and once more with their pack in the ascendancy Blair Robertson barged over for the winning try in the 80th minute. However Falkirk did go hell for leather deep into injury time and came perilously close to P.L.'s try line before the final whistle.
