In a very hard fought and closely contested 'nip and tuck' encounter a dramatic very late injury time, long range penalty conversion sealed victory for Kirkcaldy by the slenderist of margins at Sunnyside last weekend. However the very fact that the game went ahead at all was due in no small margins to the absolutely magnificent efforts of Groundsman Bill Arkley and Falkirk's Under 16 Squad and their parents in clearing the snow from the pitch to reveal a perfect playing surface underneath. Drawing first blood Falkirk absorbed early pressure from the Fifers before seizing possession and making substantial territorial gains before Stand-Off Logan Bonnar made a half-break near the corner and ghosted his way through for an unconverted try in the 3rd minute, and with Glasgow Warriors and Scotland Player Finn Russell egging on his former club from the stand Bonnar then went on to add a converted penalty not long afterwards to put Falkirk up by 8-0. Kirkcaldy, though, began to show their mettle when their Stand-Off Craig Letham converted a penalty in the 15th minute, and only five minutes later following an awesome forward rush, which saw prop forward Greg Wallace break clear with a typical bullocking, pugnacious run,the Langtooners surged on towards Falkirk's five metre line, with Flanker Dayle Turner barging over from the ensuing ruck for the touchdown, with Letham presently adding the conversion. However Falkirk retaliated when Bonnar converted a penalty on the half hour mark and a formidable 10 metre rolling maul by the home side's forwards, just four minutes later, took them deep into the Fifers' last quarter of the field and Number Eight Lawrence Miller snapped up the ball and crashed his way over for another unconverted try, following a period of concerted pressure on Kirkcaldy's 5 metre line. Letham and Bonnar then went on to trade penalties with one another for a half-time score of Falkirk 19 Kirkcaldy 13. The opening ten minutes or so saw neither side getting the better of one another, until alas Falkirk lost the services of Inside-Centre Graham Gilliland for ten minutes when he was yellow carded in the 54th minute. Taking almost immediate advantage the visitors forced Falkirk back to their 5 metre line and Dayle Turner was yet again on the spot as he broke from the rear of the ruck and barged over for his brace of tries, with Letham duly slotting over the conversion. Nevertheless Ciaran Wood regained the lead for Falkirk in the 68th minute with a converted penalty after Kirkcaldy's Right-Winger Chris Mann was yellow carded. In another very tense and fraught closing spell Falkirk failed to contain the Fifers in their own half or take advantage of the extra man and consequently when the Referee penalised Falkirk for handling in the ruck, deep into injury time Kirkcaldy were on the home side,s ten metre line and Letham most certainly made no mistakes with the conversion.
