Rallying well Falkirk put a sluggish first half performance firmly behind them to produce a very pleasing overall display to comprehensively defeat Greenock Wanderers at a dull and misty Fort Matilda last weekend. Prior to the commencement of the match one minute's silence was respectfully observed for George Bryden, who passed away recently and had been a very long time supporter of Wanderers. A sparkling start by Falkirk from the kick-off saw them storm deep into Wanderers half, with Gary Dempsey looking very threatening with the ball in hand. However Greenock managed to clear their lines on that occasion, but they were not so successful in the 9th minute when Flanker Gregor Brodie took an inside pass from Full-Back Alex Penman at pace, from just inside the home side's 22 metre area, and charged his way over for an unconverted try. Continuing to dominate Falkirk built up some promising phases of play, but very frustratingly wrong options were taken or the ball was spilled at crucial stages. However Stand-Off Logan Bonnar was desperately unlucky to see his 45 metre plus conversion attempt fall agonisingly short in the 24th minute, but the visitors went on to increase their lead, two minutes before the end of the half. Taking control and seizing the opportunity,in Wanderers last quarter of the field, Falkirk's pack of forwards drove their opposites back a full 20 metres with an awesome driving maul before Lock-Forward Kieran Dannet crashed over for the touchdown, with Logan Bonnar adding the conversion for a half-time score of 12-0 in Falkirk's favour. Keeping up the pressure Falkirk took the game to Greenock, but yet again unforced errors and dropped scoring passes reared their ugly heads and the third quarter of the match was almost scoreless. Nevertheless the visitors made ample amends in the 58th minute when Scrum-Half and Captain Harry Russell broke from the base of a scrum, from 15 metres out,and scampered over for a try under the posts. Four minutes later Falkirk won a five metre line out and the ball was swiftly transferred across the back division for Right-Winger Gordon McGuire to break through and score near the corner flag for the bonus point awarding try. Finishing off the encounter in style Russell then went on to add another try for his brace when he took a quick tap penalty and raced over under the uprights in the 74th minute. Not to be outdone McGuire broke through for his brace very shortly afterwards following slick handling from the backs, with Alex Penman adding three second half conversions.
