To say that this match at Stoneyhill last weekend was not bitterly and keenly contested would have been one of the under-statements of the year, for it had everything the eager rugby pundit could have wished for with fast, attractive running action from both sides and high drama to boot. Opening promisingly Falkirk made early inroads into Musselbergh's 22 metre area, but it soon became apparent that whenever the home side got possession of the ball they looked very threatening indeed, using their quick silver back division to telling effect. As a reward for their pressure applied Scrum-Half Danny Owenson converted back-to-back penalties in the 16th and 24th minutes respectively to put 'Burgh up by 6-0,very shortly before they went on to score their opening try of the afternoon. Taking advantage of a loss of control from a line-out on Falkirk's ten metre line the East Lothian side surged towards Falkirk's try-line,and although there was a strong suspicion of a foot in touch play was allowed to continue, with Danny Owenson weaving his way over for an unconverted try from the resultant five metre ruck. Continuing to keep Falkirk under the cosh 'Burgh then built up an attack from deep inside the visitors' half, and following a strong run from Right-Winger Callum Kerr the ball was speedily transferred to Full-Back James Doig, who then ghosted through for a neat try under the posts and Owenson duly added the conversion in the 32nd minute. However Falkirk countered admirably just on half time when they forced 'Burgh back to their own five metre line, with Stand-Off Logan Bonnar making a neat break for the line, only to be grounded just short, but Number 8 Lawrence Miller snapped up the ball and dived over under the uprights for the try, which Bonnar converted for a Half-Time score of Musselburgh 18 Falkirk 7. 'Burgh made a disastrous start to the second period when their Flanker Declan Slaven was yellow-carded for an illegal line-out infringement in the opening minute, and Falkirk took immediate advantage when Prop Keith Slade barged over in the corner from a five-metre line-out for Falkirk's 2nd try. Sensationally, from the restart Falkirk ran the ball back at 'Burgh, with both Harry Russell and Gary Dempsey handling before Lawrence Milller took possession and cruised through for his brace in the 45th minute. Yet again 'Burgh pressed the suicide button in the 52nd minute when their Prop Craig Owenson was also yellow carded for back-chat,but alas once they got back to full strength the home side then re-took the lead when Danny Owenson scored and converted a mirror image try of his first in the 64th minute to put 'Burgh up by 25-21. Regrettably tempers flared when 'Burgh's Mike Roy and Falkirk's Andrew Simpson clashed, and although no blows were exchanged Referee Paul Cyphus red-carded both players. Banishing that memory sensationally Falkirk's Captain Harry Russell snatched up turn-over ball on half way and then proceeded to duck and weave the remainder of the field for a superb individualist try, with Bonnar adding the conversion as well as the two previous second half tries to give Falkirk a 28-25 lead. Alas, after yet another nail-biting finish,Danny Owenson converted an 87th minute penalty to tie the match and Stewart McCulloch was also yellow carded.
