Although Kelso outscored Falkirk by four tries to three in the second half, with the home side leading by 45-7 at the break, the Sunnysiders proved the stronger overall and emerged as pretty comfortable victors at the end of the day, with both sides showing an enterprising spirit in a fifteen try extravaganza at Sunnyside last weekend.
Putting down an early marker Falkirk opened the scoring in the 5th minute when slick handling in Kelso's 22 metre area enabled Full-Back Craig Robertson to break through for an unconverted try. Five minutes later, with Falkirk's back division looking ominous and taking control under the borderers' posts, recently arrived Kiwi Inside-Centre Simon Rolleston effortlessly coasted his way over for try number two. Shortly before the end of the first quarter, in an angular run across Kelso's last quarter of the field, Right-Winger Kyle Rowe cleverly flicked an inside pass to fellow Winger Angus Rennie who then wasted no time at all in charging over for another touchdown.
However Kelso showed their mettle presently with some forceful phases of play and after pressurising Falkirk on their five metre line, Stand-Off Phil Hume barged over for a try which Full-Back Neil Renwick duly converted. Nevertheless Falkirk went on to score further tries from Liam Brims, Craig Robertson and a brace from Kyle Rowe, with Brims also adding five conversions.
Half-Time: Falkirk 45 v Kelso 7.
In a busy re-start Craig Robertson yet again showed good enterprise by ghosting over for his hat-trick of tries in the opening two minutes but the borders side countered five minutes later when their Scrum-Half Andy Tait barged over from a five metre ruck and Renwick added the conversion. Undeterred Falkirk responded positively in the 52nd minute when Brims latched onto a kick ahead and scored in the corner before converting his own try as well as the previous one. Alas for Falkirk they lost the services of Flanker Angus Inwood for ten minutes when he was yellow-carded and sent to the naughty boy seat on the hour mark, with Kelso taking full advantage by scoring two converted tries during that time. Uncannily not long after Angus Inwood re-took the field Craig Robertson was perhaps very unlucky in being also yellow-carded for what the Referee saw as a deliberate knock-on, luckily for him the naughty boy seat was still warm. The visitors seized their opportunity with a further unconverted try. However a formidable and determined rolling maul from Falkirk near Kelso's goal line enabled Prop-Forward Kris Burney to crash over in the corner for his side's final touchdown of the afternoon.
