Putting up a very gallant display indeed Falkirk came perilously close indeed to defeating National Division One side Dundee High School Former Pupils in the second round of the B.T. Cup at Mayfield last weekend, giving the Dundonians a real scare by taking a 19-7 lead deep into the third quarter of the match. Thankfully,on arrival, the playing conditions were ideal with Mayfield bathed in wintry sunshine and there most certainly was no evidence at all of the surface water and swollen rivers witnessed on the journey up. Settling much the quicker and getting their act into gear by taking the game to their adversaries, Falkirk were awarded a 5th minute penalty, which Stand-Off Liam Brims wasted no time at all in converting. However to their credit High did come back at Falkirk on several occasions but tended to spill the ball at crucial times in their build-up,and it must have been frustrating for them when Brims converted another penalty for Falkirk in the 21st minute. Nevertheless that just seemed to make the home side more determined as their pack of forwards took control by driving Falkirk back deep into their 22 metre area, and following a five metre ruck under the posts Scrum-Half Josh Rutnagur snapped up the ball and got the it down between the uprights, with Stand-Off Duncan Leese slotting over the easy conversion for a half time score of Dundee H.S.F.P. 7 Falkirk 6. Whatever was said in the team huddle during the break had an immediate effect on Falkirk as they most certainly hit the ground running straight from the re-starting whistle. Firstly Brims converted another penalty within two minutes of play resuming, and amazingly just five minutes afterwards Scrum-Half and Captain Harry Russell intercepted the ball on his own ten metre line and completely outstripped the Dundonians' defence for an oppertunist try under the posts, with Brims duly adding the conversion,as well as a long range penalty from the Dundonians ten metre line in the 52nd minute. Alas, and arguably the turning point of the match came very shortly afterwards, with High encamped on Falkirk's five metre line, the Referee saw fit to yellow card Full-Back Craig Robertson. Taking immediate advantage from the ensuing penalty Prop-Forward and Captain Alan Brown crashed his way over under Falkirk's posts and Leese added the two points from the conversion. Ten minutes later, and from a very similar build-up and position on the field the ball was released to the back division for Full-Back Mike Brown to canter over for an unconverted try,and with six minutes of the match remaining an awesome twenty metre rolling maul from High's forwards, in Falkirk's last quarter of the field, enabled Number 8 Gavin Hughan to get the touchdown near the corner flag. Very deep into injury time Leese converted another penaty to finally seal the tie.
