Showing a lot of character and dogged spirit Falkirk survived a dying seconds failed penalty conversion from Dundee High to emerge as victors in a very entertaining and end to end encounter at a sunny and picturesque Mayfield last weekend. Knowing that Dundee are placed a league above themselves Falkirk certainly knew that they were in for a tough fixture,and so it turned out to be. With the pitch in absolutely perfect condition both teams took full advantage and certainly gave the ball plenty of air,and after only three minutes of play High's Stand-Off slotted over an early penalty conversion. However Falkirk countered admirably,when from a line-out approximately 30 metres out,good continuity from both forwards and backs alike eventually saw Matt Larson crash over from a ruck for an unconverted try shortly afterwards. Nevertheless the Dundonians struck back presently when their number ten converted another penalty,and ten minutes later their backs stretched Falkirk's defence in the last quarter of the field for a well taken converted try. Things went from bad to worse on the half hour mark for Falkirk when Alex Penman was yellow-carded,but yet again that never-say-die spirit emerged only three minutes later when the visitors counter attacked from their own half,with Graham Gillilands sending Gary Dempsey scorching up the left-hand touchline for a very impressive try indeed. With Falkirk's regular kicker in the sin-bin up stepped big Matt Larsen,and cool as a cucumber sent the conversion sailing between the uprights. In a very similar vein as before Falkirk closed off the half in style,when following a period of concentrated pressure Graham Lindsey ghosted through a gap for an unconverted try in the 40th minute for a Half-Time score of Dundee High 13 Falkirk 17. A purposeful re-start from High bore fruit when they scored a converted try from a five metre ruck within four minutes of the starting whistle,but Falkirk were having none of it when good handling by the backs in High's 22 metre area saw Gregor Brodie burst through for a try,which was converted by Alex Penman in the 50th minute. However such was the pace and character of the match that the home side then proceeded to re-establish themselves by scoring a converted and unconverted try in the 55th and 60th minutes respectively to stretch their lead to 32-24. Needless to say that Falkirk came roaring back,and following a ruck near the corner flag Tom Johnson barged his way over for a well taken try on pressure applied five minutes afterwards. In a very exciting and tense ending Lawrence Miller capped off a fine run with an unconverted try in the opposite corner with only eight minutes of the match remaining,but more suspense was to follow as High were awarded a penalty right in front of Falkirk,s posts about 30 metres out in the dying seconds. After what seemed an eternity High's Stand-Off seemed to strike the ball well but it sailed wide and the day was Falkirk's. This week Falkirk entertain Dumfries Saints in a Cup-Tie at Cala Park.
