With their opening league fixture looming next week Falkirk most certainly got themselves into gear with an overwhelming display of open and attractive running rugby against Dumfries Saints at Cala Park last weekend. Mind you they had to suffer the ignominy of conceding a try in the opening minute as Saints built up a head of steam in Falkirk's 22 metre area and took their opportunity by dotting the ball down near the corner flag. However the homesters woke up in style and proceeded to score two quickly taken tries within the opening ten minutes of the match. Firstly, following a surge by the forwards deep into Saints territory, and winning a five metre line-out, Lock-Forward Cole Ronald (sponsored by Suckling transport) crashed over from the ensuing rolling maul for the try and very shortly afterwards Right-Winger Graham Lindsay finished off some fine phases of play near Dumfries's line with a smartly taken try near the corner. Stand-Off Alex Penman then went on to convert a penalty in the 25th minute as Falkirk continued to mount the pressure on their opposition by going on to score arguably the best try of the match when Scrum-Half Harry Russell(sponsored by Anytime Leisure Ltd) broke blind from a line-out on Saints ten metre line and jinked and weaved his way through for a splendid individualist try under the uprights, with Alex Penman duly adding the conversion. Two minutes into first half injury timeand in a carbon copy of their opening score, open-Side Wing Forward Matt Larsen barged his way over for try number four after another awesome rolling maul, with Penman again slotting over the conversion for a Half-Time score of Falkirk 27 Dumfries Saints 5.
Commencing the second period as they had finished the first Falkirk's forwards were yet again dominant with another drive on Saint's five metre line adjacent to the touchline, with Harry Russell (sponsored by anytime leisure Ltd) breaking on the narrow side and scampering round under the posts for his second try in the 43rd minute of play. To their credit though Saints countered admirably with a converted try seven minutes later, which was well deserved on pressure applied, but that man Harry Russell (anytime leisure Ltd) was at it yet again for Falkirk shortly afterwards as he went on to notch up his hat-trick of tries. Saints were awarded a scrum right under their posts, but a quick strike against the head gave Falkirk possession, with the ball swiftly being transferred left for Harry Russell (anytime leisure Ltd)) to gleefully take the scoring pass. At this stage of proceedings Falkirk just cut loose and went on to score two back-to-back tries from Alex Penman plus a try apiece from Andrew Simpson (sponsored by Friends of Falkirk) and Robbie Hogg, with Penman adding five second half conversions.
