U16 Girls win the Saltire Energy Caledonia Youth Cup Plate final

Mark Crawford31 Mar - 19:42

On a largely frustrating weekend for Falkirk's sides, the girls bucked the trend!

Falkirk's U16 Girls enjoyed success at the Saltire Energy Caledonia Youth Cup finals day, which was held at Countesswells in Aberdeen on Sunday. They started well in their early kick-off against Strathmore RFC, racing into a 26:10 lead, before being pegged back to just a single score margin in the 2nd half, but ran out comfortable 48:29 winners in the end.

They were followed by the U16 Boys, who also started strongly, leading a very well drilled Dundee side 15:7 at one stage, before eventually losing out 31:22. A frustrating end to what has been an excellent season for the team. More to come from these boys.

Meanwhile at Sunnyside, the U18 Boys hosted Robert Gordon's College in their final, but they also came up short, 10:22, against physical and very proficient opponents. Again, the boys have had a great season and beaten some excellent teams along the way, but it didn't quite click for them on the day. However, most of the squad will go again in the colts next year and they'll be better for the experience.

Finally in our weekend score round up, the 1st XV finished their season in defeat at Kirkcaldy. After Stuart Serafini retired injured in the first half, the game turned into a bit of an arm wrestle, which Falkirk were under-equipped to fight with the limited bench that had travelled. Despite this, the boys were leading 28:31 in the final quarter, before conceding a final converted score to give the home side a narrow 35:31 win. Despite the two bonus points from the result, the defeat saw Falkirk lose 4th place in the table to Stewarts Melville.

And the 2nd XV were also on the road, playing Dundee's 2's for the 2nd successive weekend in their penultimate fixture of the season. After a terrible start (0-17), Falkirk came back into the game strongly and were agonisingly close to nicking the win, just running out of time with the final whistle blowing at 43:41. Their final fixture is away to Howe 2's this Saturday and we encourage supporters to join the players on the team bus, which will be heading into St Andrews afterwards for an hour or so.
