Alex Ronnay

The Club received some sad, but expected news this week, Monday 10th May, when one of our ‘originals’ passed away quietly in his sleep.

Alex Ronnay came to Falkirk as a young chemical engineer from Ayrshire to work for ICI in Grangemouth. He ‘got involved’ in the formative ICI rugby side in the late 60s and was one of the Founding Fathers of Falkirk RFC in 1972.

Alex enjoy the game in a variety of positions, from prop through centre to winger. He was hugely committed to the success of the club, balancing playing whilst serving on the Committee for almost 40 years from 1975, in that time covering pretty much every Committee role. Perhaps the role that gave him the most pleasure was of Vice President of the Juniors. Many of our current senior club members were influenced by Alex during his tenure in that role.

A great tourist in his day, he played a part in the establishment of ‘friendly’ 5 Nations annually links with ICI Pontypool, who like Falkirk, later established themselves as Pontyfelin RFC. These links with South Wales are sustained today with the regular Friday 6 Nations warm up game between Falkirk and New Panteg being vigorously contested.
His contribution to Falkirk RFC is maybe best summed up by a former President, ‘I can’t recall a season when Alex didn’t have some Committee position’. His presence and humour will be sadly missed around Sunnyside. The ball seems a little heavier today.

Our thoughts are with Kirsten and Graeme. The Falkirk RFC Family look forward to celebrating Alex’s life with them and his Grandkids, Dylan, Ava and Leo the next time they can come down to the Club.
